Health Literacy Solutions
Health literacy is the ability to read, understand
and act on health care information.
Our clients in the health care industry must provide their members with communications that are written in Plain Language and meet Medicaid and Medicare reading level requirements. Often our clients do not have the in-house resources or Health Literacy expertise to meet these goals. Our Health Literacy team has produced many types of communications that follow Health Literacy guidelines including disease state handbooks, letters with member benefit and plan information, and a pregnancy book written and designed for the Medicaid population. We've been able to help our clients meet government requirements and ensure comprehension and compliance with their members.
Health Literacy varies by context and setting and is not necessarily related to years of education or general reading ability. A person who functions adequately at home or work may have marginal or inadequate literacy in a health care environment. With the move towards a more "consumer-centric" health care system as part of an overall effort to improve the quality of health care and to reduce health care costs, individuals need to take an even more active role in health care related decisions. To accomplish this people need strong health information skills.
